EWP Training
For people who are required to work safely on an elevated work platform (EWP)
We offer two options:
Foundation COC
Elevated Work Platform Training
Recommended for anyone who has no prior knowledge of elevated work platforms.
Advanced
Refresher or Custom EWP Training
Recommended for anyone who has completed an NZQA Elavated Work Platform course.
EWP Training Course
FOUNDATION Certificate of Competency
For anyone who hasn’t completed any elevated work platform training we recommend this course to form a good foundation of knowledge.
Please note that this is not an NZQA course – it’s better. It covers the same content as the following unit standards plus any additional content that would be beneficial to your unique business situation.
Students are assessed by one of our NZQA certified trainers.
The duration of this EWP course is 1 day.
Describe types of elevating work platforms (EWPs), and legislative requirements for their use
- Types of EWPs, their suitability for purpose and safety features
- Legislative requirements in relation to Code of Practice and the use of EWPs
Scissor Lift– (Elective topic)
Assess the worksite, prepare and operate a scissor lift elevating work platform (EWP)
- Assess the worksite, and prepare to use a scissor lift EWP
- Carry out operations in a workplace environment
- Report faults and damage
- Shut down the scissor lift EWP
Truck Mounted – (Elective topic)
Assess the worksite, prepare and operate a truck-mounted elevating work platform (EWP)
- Assess the worksite, and prepare to use a truck-mounted mounted EWP
- Carry out operations in a workplace environment
- Report faults
- Shut down the truck-mounted EWP
Boom Lift– (Elective topic)
Assess the worksite, prepare and operate a self propelled boom lift elevating work platform (EWP)
- Assess the worksite
- Prepare to use a self-propelled boom lift EWP
- Carry out operations in a workplace environment
- Report faults, and shut down the self-propelled boom lift EWP
Trailer Mounted – (Elective topic)

Refresher or Custom EWP Training Course
A refresher or custom course may benefit anyone who has already completed an NZQA EWP course because it can have a more specific training approach.
Instead of going over already learnt information, a refresher or custom course allows the time to be better spent concentrating on the specific needs of the workplace and the workers for example:
- Rescue scenarios
- Real world work scenarios
- Handling skills
- First aid or medical intervention
With a custom course you are not limited to a specific timeframe, topics or program.
The course content can be tailored to your specific requirements.
You will be expanding your skills based on the foundation knowledge you already have.
A custom course will be designed uniquely for you and it starts with a consult so we can understand your requirements and come up with the best learning program.
Duration and course size
The duration and maximum numbers of people on the course will depend on your requirements and the complexity of the course content. We prioritise keeping everyone safe and maximising the best learning environment. A good instructor to student ratio is important especially if you would like to run through complex situations.
Certificate of Competency
All students who are deemed competent will be issued with a Skill Lab Certificate of Competency (COC) card and certificate.
Refreshers
We can deliver NZQA refresher courses for students who currently hold NZQA units.

Our teaching style
Some people learn more effectively with verbal, written or visual teaching, others are more practical and learn by doing.
At the outset of each course we make an assessment on what type of learner each student is and then teach the course in a way that maximises learning and retention.
It's taken over a decade of experience to hone this method and it works very well for most students.
