For people who are required to work safely in confined spaces
We offer two options:

Recommended for anyone who has completed a foundation confined space course.
Confined Space Training Course
FOUNDATION Certificate of Competency
For anyone who hasn’t completed any confined space training we recommend this course to form a good foundation of knowledge.
Please note that this is not an NZQA course – it’s better. It covers the same content as the following unit standards plus any additional content that would be beneficial to your unique business situation.
Students are assessed by one of our NZQA certified trainers.
The duration of this course is 2 days.
Plan a confined space entry
- Identify hazards and controls within confined spaces
- Develop an emergency procedure plan for a confined space
- Complete documentation required for confined space entry
Operate an atmospheric testing device to determine a suitable atmosphere exists to work safely
- Demonstrate knowledge of atmospheric testing in potentially hazardous environments
- Conduct atmospheric tests and interpret and respond to atmospheric testing results
Demonstrate knowledge of hazards associated with confined spaces
- Demonstrate knowledge of confined spaces, and their permit notification and implementation requirements
- Identify control measures to eliminate, isolate, and minimise the risk of hazards in confined spaces
- Demonstrate knowledge of monitoring and confined space testing requirements
- Describe the responsibilities and duties of people entering confined spaces or conducting observation duties for confined spaces
COC – Certificate of Competency on course completion
All students who are deemed competent will be issued with a Skill Lab Certificate of Competency (COC) card and certificate.

Refresher or Custom Confined Space Training Course
A refresher or custom course may benefit anyone who has already completed an NZQA confined space course because it can have a more specific training approach.
Instead of going over already learnt information, a refresher or custom course allows the time to be better spent concentrating on the specific needs of the workplace and the workers.
We can expand on the basic topics covered and train in other areas, for example:
- Rescue scenarios
- Pulley systems
- Breathing apparatus
- Gasses and the way they separate
- Ventilation and exhaust
- First aid or medical intervention
With a custom course you are not limited to a specific timeframe, topics or program. The course content can be tailored to your specific requirements. You will be expanding your knowledge based on the foundation knowledge you already have.
A custom course can be designed uniquely for you and it starts with a consult so we can understand your needs and come up with the best learning program.
Duration and course size
The duration and maximum numbers of people on the course will depend on your requirements and the complexity of the course content. We prioritise keeping everyone safe and maximising the best learning environment. A good instructor to student ratio is important especially if you would like to run through complex situations.
COC – Certificate of Competency
All students who are deemed competent will be issued with a Skill Lab Certificate of Competency (COC) card and certificate.
Refreshers
We can deliver confined space refresher courses for students who currently hold NZQA units.

At the outset of each course we make an assessment on what type of learner each student is and then teach the course in a way that maximises learning and retention.
It's taken over a decade of experience to hone this method and it works very well for most students.
